Dr. Katherine Birchenough is certified in functional medicine and an expert in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. We are Greenville’s premier physician-run medical Wellness and Aesthetic center. At OptimalSelf MD, we offer torso tuck and liposuction surgery for men in Greenville, Simpsonville, Greer, Spartanburg, and the surrounding communities in South Carolina.

WHAT IS TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Our torso tuck and liposuction surgery for men creates masculine contours by removing excess fat and sagging skin. These problems tend to develop in the abdominal area, which is addressed with a male tummy tuck, as well as the upper torso, which is addressed with male chest liposuction. Dr. Shawn also improves the male physique with gynecomastia surgery for men. You can see how the procedures work in our torso tuck and liposuction before and after photos.

HOW MUCH DOES TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY COST?

At OptimalSelf MD, we understand that you want to feel good about yourself, yet cost may be a primary consideration. We recommend that you schedule a consultation as a first step.  As part of the consultation, we explain your male liposuction cost and male tummy tuck cost, and payment can be made by cash, check, and credit card. We also work with CareCredit® and Alphaeon® to offer our patients financing options.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

A male tummy tuck requires general anesthesia, so you should be in good health before considering this type of torso tuck and liposuction procedure. Male liposuction may be performed with local anesthesia. Beyond the health considerations, Dr. Shawn recommends a torso tuck and liposuction treatment plan to men who feel discouraged by their upper bodies and have had little success through exercise.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

The procedure takes approximately two to three hours and can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative. An incision is made along the lower abdomen to allow the fat and skin to be removed. The abdominal muscles (rectus or “six-pack” muscles) are tightened if they are loose or separated. Then, upper abdomen skin is then brought down to tighten and flatten the stomach. Drains are typically placed under the skin, and these are removed in the clinic usually seven to 10 days later.

Liposuction may be beneficial to supplement areas around the upper abdomen or off to the sides at the flanks, during an abdominoplasty, to optimize the results and final shape. Small incisions are then made in as inconspicuous places as possible. A cannula (small hollow tube) is then inserted and moved back-and-forth beneath the skin, breaking up the fat layer and suctioning it out with the injected fluid. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used and can last anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the amount of fat being removed.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO RECOVER FROM TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Recovery time ranges from two to six weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery. Lifting and strenuous exercise will be restricted initially. Typically, walking can start within one week, with cardio activity starting within two to three weeks. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting. Of course, recovery is an ongoing process, so you will be able to do more and more gradually, but as a general guideline, patients are driving in one to two weeks, and back at work in one to three weeks. Specific job restrictions should be discussed with Dr. Shawn, as everyone will heal slightly differently and have unique job requirements.

After liposuction, you’ll be sore and a little swollen for a few days. Dr. Shawn can provide pain relievers to keep you comfortable. He will likely advise you to wear a special compression garment to speed healing, and keep swelling under control. Most patients can return to work within a few days. The best results of liposuction are noticed at three to six months after the procedure, as long as there is no significant weight gain. However, most patients notice changes within a few weeks.

Strenuous exercise can be restarted at about three to four weeks, but Dr. Shawn encourages patients to begin low cardio activities within a few days, with the compression garments in place. Job restrictions will depend on how much lifting is necessary or how strenuous your job is. Male tummy tuck scars take up to one year to fully develop, and they will be slightly darker than your natural skin color. Male liposuction produces very small scars that are barely noticeable except upon close inspection.

CAN I SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION FOR TORSO TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Dr. Shawn specializes in techniques that are needed for male plastic surgery to ensure that the results create a masculine appearance. We encourage you to schedule a 15-minute phone consultation with him, or an in-office consultation for a fee. During your consultation, Dr. Shawn will examine your areas of concern and help you decide if liposuction is right for you, or if the skin needs to be addressed separately with a different type of procedure. Think about questions that you want to ask Dr. Shawn during the consultation, such as:

  • “How much of my belly fat is ‘inside’ versus ‘outside,’ and how will this affect my liposuction results?”
