Should I Lose Weight Before Fat Transfer?

Facial Fat Transfer in Greenville, SCThe fat transfer procedure is a unique treatment that allows patients to take unwanted fat from a particular area of the body and transfer it to another area to enhance volume and body contours. As you might expect, this treatment does require patients to have a certain amount of fat to ensure that the optimal results can be produced in the transplant area. Below, we’ll take a look at how much fat is needed to get started with this treatment.

Liposuction Requirements

The fat transfer procedure is partially a liposuction treatment, so the requirements of liposuction patients will be the same as the requirements of fat transfer patients. Ultimately, there is a maximum body fat percentage that is appropriate for liposuction treatment. We require that patients are within 30% of their ideal weight before having liposuction as part of their fat transfer procedure. If you are greater than 30% over the ideal body weight, you will have to lose some weight before liposuction and the fat transfer procedure.

Minimum Fat Requirements

Of course, you’ll also need to have a minimum amount of fat to produce your desired results with the fat transfer procedure. It is important to consider that the amount of fat needed will depend on your particular treatment. Fat transfers to the face will require much less fat than fat transfers to the breasts or buttocks. Generally, patients with a BMI of 22 or higher will have enough fat to achieve their desired results with fat transfer treatments. As long as you have a BMI of at least 22, and you are less than 30% over the ideal body weight, you will not need to do anything to prepare for your fat transfer treatment.

Preparing for a Fat Transfer

Regardless of your current weight, you’ll need to maintain a stable weight in the weeks leading up to your fat transfer procedure. Maintaining a healthy weight prior to your treatment helps the body heal after treatment, and will help you maintain optimal results in the months and years after your fat transfer procedure.
