Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeovers are designed to help women restore their pre-pregnancy bodies. Pregnancy affects every woman’s body differently, so each mommy makeover Dr. Shawn designs and completes for his patients is personalized and combines various plastic surgery procedures. Most commonly, procedures to improve the breasts and abdomen are done.

In the last decade we’ve seen women’s attitudes about cosmetic surgery change. Today proud moms are not afraid to admit that they would like their bodies to look the way they did before their first pregnancies, and they’re not afraid to acknowledge that they may need a little help beyond a healthy diet and exercise.

What Can I Expect During My Mommy Makeover?

Patients will choose the surgical and procedural elements of their mommy makeover based on discussions with Dr. Shawn to determine the best options to achieve their best post-baby body. Often the breasts are lifted. If there is volume loss from pregnancy and breast-feeding, this can be remedied with the addition of a breast implant. Alternatively, if the breasts are excessively large and causing discomfort, the size may be reduced. Refer to the breast specialties area for more information.

In an abdominoplasty (or “tummy tuck”), the abdominal muscles are tightened to strengthen the midsection and narrow the waist. Lastly, the excess lower abdominal skin with stretch marks is removed. Some women have bothersome extra skin that hangs over their caesarean section and an abdominoplasty can remove this scar and skin in order to smooth the contour. Liposuction can be used to remove extra fat instead of a tummy tuck on some new mothers.

How Long Will It Take For Me to Recover?

Recovery time is variable based on the amount of surgery needed for the separate areas. By combining breast and abdominal surgery, the recovery time overlaps, so you can get back to normal sooner than if you did them separately in stages.

What questions should I ask Dr. Birchenough?

  • “How much surgery can I have at one time?”
  • “I just want a breast lift, so do I really need to get an implant too?”
  • “Does it make sense to do the surgeries together on the breast and abdomen, or to do them separately?”
