Abdominoplasty (aka “tummy tuck”) helps to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles. Muscle tightening is most important for women who have a rounded or protruding lower abdomen, typically due to stretched muscles after pregnancy.
The best candidates are in good physical condition with pockets of fat or loose skin that haven’t responded well to diet and exercise. Slightly overweight people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity can be helped. Abdominoplasty can also be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy, but may not necessarily have a large amount of abdominal fat.
Results from this procedure may diminish if a patient continues to bear children. For this reason, women who plan to have children again are advised to delay abdominoplasty. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight are also encouraged to wait until they reach their “sustainable weight” prior to the procedure, since skin in that area typically loosens after substantial weight loss.
Abdominoplasty also exists as a mini tummy tuck. For more information, please watch the video below.
What Can I Expect During an Abdominoplasty
The procedure takes approximately two to three hours and can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative, if it is a smaller area of skin and fat removal.
How Long Will It Take For Me to Recover?
Most patients can return to normal social activities within one to two weeks. Recovery time ranges from two – six weeks, depending on the physical activity that you would like to do. Typically, walking can start within one week, with cardio activity starting within two to three weeks. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting.
